From 4 to 6 September, Trutnov hosted the 17th photo workshop organized by members of Wikimedia Czech Republic over the past 18 years. It brought together 12 Wikipedians, 5 of them members of the association and 7 non-members. Four participants attended a photo workshop for the first time.
As always, the participants put the program together themselves. In the past, they were mostly interested in tools for uploading photos to Wikipedia or in photographing people. This year, the focus shifted to mobile phone photography and the future of photography. The workshop included:
- talks and demonstrations by an expert instructor,
- group photography, with the instructor advising participants on how to photograph specific subjects with their own equipment,
- night and individual photography in and around Trutnov,
- peer review of photographs.
As at all previous two-day photo workshops, the instructor was Spock Lone Wolf, who has led them all free of charge.
Participants took over 600 photos and captured more than 80 new subjects. Around a hundred images are already used on Wikipedia and Wikidata. The numbers, however, are not what matters most. The main goal is for participants to put the knowledge and experience they gained to use when taking photos for Wikipedia in the future.
The workshop was organized by Wikipedian Packa with support from the association’s staff and a Community Minigrant from Wikimedia Czech Republic. More details are available on Czech Wikipedia, and the photos can be found on Wikimedia Commons.
