Human Rights Day: Brno Students Learned to Work with Wikipedia

On June 9, 2025, a themed Human Rights Day was held at the Secondary School of Informatics, Postal Services and Finance in Brno. The morning program opened with lectures by three prominent figures in Czech journalism – Tomáš Etzler, Silvie Lauder, and Jana Ciglerová.

Students then participated in afternoon workshops focused on various aspects of human rights. They could choose from fourteen diverse topics, including self-defense for women, yoga practice, the impact of social media, and human rights in different political regimes.

One of the workshops focused on Wikipedia editing. It was led by teacher and Wikipedian Martin Hájek (Mahaj), assisted by Lukáš Pinkas and Lukáš Fiala. After a brief introductory crash course, students selected a topic from the Human Rights Wikiproject and began creating their own articles.

The instructor team supported students not only with the technical aspects of editing, but also with following Wikipedia guidelines and verifying information. As a result, several new articles were created, expanding Wikipedia’s content in the field of human rights.
