Starting in the winter semester of 2025/2026, students (not only) from the Department of Asian Studies at the Faculty of Arts, Palacký University in Olomouc, will be able to enroll in a course that combines academic and encyclopedic writing. The course, entitled Open Knowledge for a Sustainable Future: Research, Ethics, and Wikipedia, will be taught by professor Francis Bond and will be conducted in both Czech and English. In addition to learning how to write and source academic texts, students will also learn how to write articles for Wikipedia under the supervision of Wikimedia Czech Republic’s chief tutor, Pavel Bednařík.
The aim is to learn how to create and work with open information sources and use them when writing encyclopedic entries. Both teachers will explain the rules and principles on which Wikipedia is based, as well as the differences between working on the Czech and English versions of Wikipedia.
The course will take place once every 14 days from September 23, 2025, in classroom 2.39 at Tř. Svobody 26. Credit will be awarded for the writing one academic text and one entry on the Czech or English Wikipedia. More information can be found on this page: https://bond-lab.github.io/Open-Knowledge. You can register in stag, course code DAS/OK.
