In early December, a lecture by Wikimedia Czech Republic, led by Tadeáš Bednarz, took place at the Faculty of Social Studies of the University of Ostrava, connecting the world of the open encyclopedia with the theme of World AIDS Day. At the invitation of lecturer Karel Pavlica, social work students were introduced to the principles of Wikipedia and practically tested working with sources directly in the article about World AIDS Day. Participants also focused on a critical comparison of content, analyzing the different approaches to HIV and AIDS entries on the Czech and English language versions.
A current topic that aroused great interest among students was artificial intelligence and its relationship to Wikipedia. The discussion focused on how the community identifies AI-generated texts, what tools it uses for detection, and conversely, how language models draw data from Wikipedia. The meeting, which followed up on earlier successful cooperation with the university within the Rainbow Editaton, confirmed the importance of media literacy and information verification in the context of social work.
