The “Add a Citation” Challenge Begins! Add One Reference to Wikipedia and Join the Contest!

THE ADD A CITATION CAMPAIGN HAS STARTED!

What’s the task? Add at least one reference to Wikipedia!
Any citation from a reliable source helps Wikipedia readers all over the world.

The global campaign Add a Citation (internationally known as #1Lib1Ref) encourages (not only) librarians to enrich Wikipedia with at least one citation (reference) using sources available in their libraries.

Want to take part? Join us between January 15 and February 5, 2026. Not a librarian? No problem – anyone can participate!

Edit with us! We’ll show you how.

  • Special Monday Wikipedia Help Desk – online, on Monday, February 2, 2026, from 6:00 PM.
    • Join us at the Wikipedia Help Desk and add citations to Wikipedia under the guidance of Wikimedia Czech Republic’s lead trainer!

To be included in the prize draw for Wikimedia-themed rewards, don’t forget to add the appropriate hashtag to your edit summary. How? Fill in the edit summary (e.g. “adding a reference”) and include the hashtag #1Lib1Ref.

You can also take part in the Central and Eastern Europe regional contest! The winner will receive a voucher for the international Wikistore. Just add a second hashtag: #1Lib1RefCEE. Are you in?

Why librarians? Who is better suited to maintaining the quality of citations on Wikipedia than librarians? They are experts in searching for and providing information and work daily with books and journals – invaluable sources for Wikipedia.

The Add a Citation campaign (#1Lib1Ref), held twice a year, is organized by the Wikimedia Foundation and supported by the Wikipedia Library Team and Wikimedia Affiliates worldwide. We also work closely with librarian communities at both local and global levels to promote the campaign.
