The second edition of the international Wiki Loves Film challenge, which focuses on films, their creators, and cinematography as a whole, is approaching its second half. Since July 1, the challenge has visited Czech film festivals, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, and the Summer Film School in Uherské Hradiště, and organized an online edit-a-thon dedicated to Uzbek cinema—Wiki Loves Uzbek Cinema.
Jan Beránek brought back a number of exceptional photographs from Karlovy Vary, including shots of Quentin Tarantino’s longtime cinematographer, Robert Richardson. At the Summer Film School, a lecture and workshop titled “Wikipedia and Film” took place, during which Pavel Bednařík focused, among other things, on the opening Czech film Wirbel and its director, Tomáš Hubáček, who worked on it for over nine years. At Wikimania in Paris, a creative workshop was held focused on working with free works, photographs from films, and footage that served as the basis for remixes and collages (check out the photo gallery on Commons).
In August, we’ll be hosting our main online edit-a-thon, which will take place on Wednesday, August 12th, 2026, starting at 4:00 p.m. CET. The event will feature an analysis of the participating countries, articles, and photos, and will introduce the individual partners of the challenge. It will also engage participants in a trivia quiz about films and filmmakers from Eastern and Central Europe. The winners will receive prizes from our partners.
In some countries (Slovakia, Romania), the challenge will take place throughout August and September.
